Most Confusing Movies Ever Made

Posted on 29 Feb 00:00

Movies are produced for a wide variety of reasons; some are meant to entertain; others are meant to enlighten. Likewise, some movies are produced to frighten. However, there a few others; the confusing ones; whose genres can't really be figured out, even after multiple viewings.

Below is a list of movies most consider to be popular, and very confusing.

1)  Donnie Darko (2001)

Donnie Darko is an American Sci-Fi psychological thriller, that starts as a lackluster film at the Box Office, and becomes the No. 2 greatest independent film of all time. This movie was directed by Richard Kelly, and it stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Holmes Osborne (Eddie Darko), James Duval (Frank Anderson), & Maggie Gyllenhaal (Elizabeth Darko). Donnie Darko is about a troubled youth, who has the same name as the movie itself, Donnie Darko. When Donnie sleeps, a mysterious Bunny character, named Frank, beckons to him. While sleepwalking, Donnie attends to Frank's needs, which involves vandalism. Creepy Frank continued to taunt Donnie in visions, while telling him that the end of the world is imminent. Donnie's parents Eddie (Homes Osborne) and Rose (Maggie Gyllenhaal) convinces him to consult Dr. Thurman (Katherine Ross), a psychotherapist, for help. But does not stop Frank's plan for the end of the world.

The movie combines time travel, with vandalism and sleepwalking, which as one can image, is confusing.

2)  Under The Skin (2013)

Under The Skin, is one of the most confusing movies produced. The movie, directed by Jonathan Glaze, was meant to mimic Michel Faber's novel of the same title. But in the end, it was just confusing. The movie is about an unnamed alien woman (Scarlett Johansson), who uses her feminist wiles to prey on men,in Scotland. She lures her first victim, Joe Szula, into a broken-down building and submerges him in a liquid void. She drives through the town in a van, tempting her victims (horny young males) as she goes. As asexy seductress men fall at her feet and mindlessly follow her. She meets a disfigured man (Adam Pearson), and for the first time, lets this targeted victim go. Becoming curious about humanity, she abandons her cause and journeys into the forest with another character (Michael Moreland). They share a brief moment of passion, then she victimizes him. As she journeys through the forest, she meets a commercial logger (Dave Acton), who later extricates her from her human skin.

From the beginning of the movie to the end, we see three motorcyclists that are unnamed. Also, how 'she' came to 'be' is never revealed. Confusing, yes!

3) Mulholland Drive (2001)

Mulholland Drive is another confusing movie for the die-hard movie buffs. To begin with, this movie is a neo-noir mystery film and its screenplay was written and directed by the same person, David Lynch. The is about the life of Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), an up-and-coming actress, looking to make the big scene, Hollywood. Betty, is new to the Hollywood scenes, she meets an amnesiac woman (Laura Harring) at her aunt's home. The amnesiac woman lost her memory in a car crash at Mulholland Drive, and she now answers to the name Rita, a name she picked up from a film poster starring Rita Hayworth. From this point forward, the movie jumps sequence to sequence taking us through a non-linear story of Betty and the self-named Rita. While Betty seeks ways to help Rita figure out who she was before the accident, a horrible figure lurks behind Winkie's diner.

This movie is very confusing because,it seems the the whole movies turns out to be a horrible nightmare. And, the horrible character in Winkie's dinner turns out to be a real-life assassin hired by a character named Diane Selwyn, who turns out to be the real-life character of Betty Elms. Pretty confusin

4) 12 Monkeys (1995)

The 12 monkeys, was directed by Terry Gilliam, and tells the story of how a deadly virus, released by a group, called 12 Monkeys annihilates over half of the world's population. Making the surface of the earth uninhabitable for the survivors. To find a cure for the virus, someone must go back in time. Now underground, the earth survivors chose James Cole (Bruce Willis), a prisoner, who has trouble sleeping due to reoccurring nightmares. Cole is sent back in time to Baltimore, to retrieve the antidote. But he finds in himself in the right city, in the wrong year. The movie also stars Madeleine Stowe (Kathryn Railly), Brad Pitt (Jeffrey Goines), and Christopher Plummer (Dr. Leland Goines).

As the movie jumps forward and backwards with Bruce Willis, it is hard to keep track of the characters and the events.

5) Memento (2000)

Memento is a movie thriller directed by Christopher Nolan. It stars Guy Pearce, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Guy Pearce plays an amnesiac man, who can not retain more than 5 minutes worth of memory at a time. In the attempt to find the people who ruined his life, murdered his wife, and caused his memory problem, he creates an intricate Polaroid photograph system. He combines the intricate photo system with tattoos to find his way around when he has memory loss.

Because of the protagonist's mental health, Christopher Nolan shoots the current actions in black and white and the reverse actions in color sequences in order that everything will make sense to the viewer at the end. It didn't work.

6) Naked Lunch (1991)

Naked Lunch was produced in 1991 and directed by David Cronenberg. Though extremely confusing, this movie has won several awards, one of them being the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Director. The movie is about an exterminator, William Lee (Peter Weller), who discovers that Joan (Judy Davis), his wife is using his pyrethrum insecticide as a psychoactive drug. When the police arraigns Lee, he is exposed to 'bug powder'. As a result, he begins hallucinating, believing that he is a secret agent on a mission to kill his wife Joan, who he imagines to be a rival agent. In his hallucinatory state, he is assigned to two handlers, an alien 'Mugwump' and a talking insectoid typewriter. He eliminates his wife and is sent on another mission, to seduce the doppelganger of his deceased wife.

This movie is twisted, the events that unfold after Lee's arrest are very confusing.

7) Upstream Color (2013)

This was directed by Shane Carruth. Shane also, produced, edited, cast and starred in this movie. The movie is about a larva harvesting man, 'Thief' (Thiago Martins). Thief kidnaps Kris (Amy Seimetz) from a club and pushed the harvested larva into her mouth. With the larve inside her, he hypnotizes her and she liquidates her assets to give to him. Later on in the movie, a farmer, known by the name, Sampler (Andrew Sensenig), performs a transfusion on Kris and transfers the worm inside of her to his pig. At the end of the movie, she falls in love with a guy, Jeff (Shane Carruth,) who also was a victim of the Thief and the Sampler.

This movie is confusing from start to finish. Even the serious movie buffs cannot explain how Kris and Jeff connect to the pigs at Sampler's farm, nor any aspect of this movie.

Even though these movies are confusing, they are definitely worth a watch!
