In 1945, an American Infantry company sets up an artillery observation post, but tensions between Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert) and Lieutenant Costa (Jack Palance) run high. Costa harbors some serious doubts about the leadership abilities of Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert), a coward who only secured his position because of his ties to Lt. Col. Bartlett (Lee Marvin).
