The Naked and the Dead DVD (1958)
While stationed at a U.S. Army base on an island in the Pacific, idealistic Lieutenant Hearn (Cliff Robertson) has the nerve to question the morality of his mentor, grizzled veteran General Cummings (Raymond Massey). As a consequence, Hearn is reassigned to lead a squad of soldiers on a dangerous mission -- much to the dismay of the previous squad leader, cynical warmonger Sergeant Croft (Aldo Ray). As the squad nears its goal, the relationship between Hearn and Croft rapidly deteriorates. Delivered sealed in case with artwork as shown on our page.

Viewer Review: This film shows us what army veterans can turn into after being in the field for too long or too often. Racism, anti-Semitism, brutality, spousal abuse, extra-marital affairs, paranoia, and alcoholism all play a role in defining this band of army veterans sent off to fight yet another endless fight overseas. This is not a pretty picture, nor is it a heroic picture, but it is filled with a lot of raw feelings and true to life violence. Not to give away the ending, but you will be shocked and surprised. The film still shows the horror and depravity of war without getting preachy, as many later films did. Definitely worth the watch.
