Best Biographical Movies - Part 12

Here, in Part 12 of this series are seven more examples of the best biographical movies ever produced.

1.  Three Identical Strangers (2018)

Plot: 'Three Identical Strangers' focuses on three adults who are triplets but were separated in childhood when different families adopted them. The triplets are David Kellman, Edward Galland, and Robert Shafran. The triplets got to know one another by chance when they were 19. The film includes re-enacted scenes, camera footage, and interviews the trio to determine what has transpired in their lives. The film chronicles both private and the public aspects of their lives. The triplets relate how after discovering each other, that a bigger discovery awaited them. They soon realized that they were adopted as part of a scientific study investigating nature versus nurture and tried to explore how different socioeconomic conditions would affect them despite being identical.

Director: Tim Wardle.

Main Cast:  Edward Galland, David Kellman and Robert Shafran.

Commercial Performance: 'Three Identical Strangers' was successful. While making the movie, the production team spent $1 - 4 million. The movie grossed $12 million.

Awards and Nominations:  Most critics reviewed it and gave it a postives review. The movie's premiere took place at Sundance Festival in 2018. The film was nominated for and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at this event. The Academy Awards recognized the film for its great performance. At its 72nd event, the Academy Awards nominated the movie for the Best Documentary, but it lost to another film.


2.  4 Little Girls (1997)

Plot: '4 Little Girls' is about the killing of four innocent black girls. Their names are (Addie May Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, and Carole Rosamond Robertson, they were victims of the bombing at Alabama’s 16th Street Baptist Church located in Birmingham.

Director: Spike Lee.

Main Cast: Addie May Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, and Carole Rosamond Robertson. There are appearances of Spike Lee and others.

Commercial Performance: This film was produced on a $1M budget and grossed only $136,000 at the box office. 

Awards and Nominations: Although the film did not do well commercially, it was considered to be a great movie. Critics acknowledged the film's greatness, which led to the movie's nomination for the Best Documentary Film for Academy Award.


3.  Tabloid (2010)

Plot:  This film is about a case of kidnapping. Joyce McKinney is the main suspect in the case that involves the kidnapping and rape of Kirk Anderson (a Mormon missionary). The movie blends television reports, footage, and various interviews to develop the theme. Joyce narrates how she grew up full of life and very beautiful. To her, meeting Kirk Anderson (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) was the best thing that happened to her, and upon meeting she claims they both fell madly in love. From the beginning, she did not trust the church that Kirk associated with which resulted in a series of strange events.

Director:  Errol Morris.

Main Cast: Joyce McKinney. Kirk Anderson refused to be interviewed.

Commercial Performance:  Unknown.

Awards and Nominations: Tis film was greatly praised by critics, and it won the San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle Award for Best Documentary Film.


4.  Trekkies (1997)

Plot: The film is about the fans of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, otherwise known as 'Trekkies'. In making the film, director Roger Nygard interviews several devotees of Star Trek. The devotees come from all walks of life. 

Director: Roger Nygard.

Main Cast: Gabriel Köerner and Dennis Crosby who conducts the interview.

Commercial Performance: This films budget was $375,000. There is no information about box office receipts.

Awards and Nominations: This film was positively received by the critics. It received a total of one award and five nominations. Roger Nygard was nominated for the 20/20 Best Documentary Award. During the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, the USA in 2000, the film received the Saturn Award for Best Home Video Release nomination.


5.  Vernon, Florida (1981)

Plot: This film depicts life in one of Florida's towns, Vernon. The film's original name was 'Nut Club'. It is the follow-up after the film 'Gates of Hell'. This film focuses on the residents of Vernon, Florida's propensity for collecting insurance money after losing limbs in accidents. The directors had many failed attempts to interview residents, and was even met with hostility at times.

Director: Errol Morris.

Main Cast: Albert Bitterling, Roscoe Collins, George Harris, Joe Payne, Howard Pettis, and Claude Register.

Commercial Performance: Unknown.

Awards and Nominations: This film was one of the most critically acclaimed documentary movies. Rotten Tomatoes awarded the movie a 100% approval rating. No awards were won.


6.  Marwencol (2010)

Plot:  This film is about the work of artist and photographer, Mark Hogancamp whose life revolves around photography and art. Director, Robert Zemeckis explores Hogancamp’s life, showing the audience what the other side of art is like. For example, at one point Mark made a statement in a bar that he was a cross-dresser. An later that evening outside the bar, he was almost beaten to death. He was in a coma for forty days and recovered but lost memory of his past life.

Director: Robert Zemeckis.

Main Cast: Mark Hogancamp.

Commercial Performance: This films budget was $38,000. Upon premiering, it grossed more than $112,000. A

Awards and Nominations: In 2011 this film won an award, the Independent Truer than Fiction Award.


7.  Winnebago Man (2010)

Plot: This film depicts the internet phenomenon created by a series of twenty-year-old movie outtakes from a Winnebago sales video featuring profane outbursts from a salesperson named Jack Rebney. It was originally intended as an inside joke, however the video spread across the world—first on VHS, and then on YouTube and other online video sites, and branded the salesman the title of "The Angriest Man in the World". The documentary explores the story of the clips' origins and how, two decades later, it affects the reluctant star.

Director: Ben Steinbauer.

Main Cast: Jack Rebney.

Commercial Performance:  Unknown.

Awards and Nominations: This film was critically acclaimed and garnered several awards, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Sarasota Film Festival, the Top Ten Audience Favorite at the Hot Docs Film Festival, and the Audience Award for Best Documentary, CineVegas Film Festival.
